Federal Way Government Information
Here’s an orientation for the government information specific to you, our fellow Federal Way residents. Some cities are divided between multiple districts at different levels - for now, we’re all in the same district for county, state, and federal. This could change with redistricting! Also, some of you may be in unincorporated King County, where the city information does not directly apply (you can weigh in at council meetings but you won’t get to vote for those positions), and others are nearby in North East Tacoma, where most of this does not apply at all.
We’ve provided links for you to reach your elected officials through digital means, whether that’s a direct e-mail address or a link to their web contact form, and a link to their official government site to learn more.
In order to vote in any election, you must be registered at the right address. Most registration problems arise from having moved without updating your registration; you can re-register without penalty if you don’t remember if you’ve done so.
As of June, 2026: For 2026, you have until July 27th to register online or by mail for the primaries, or register by August 4th in person (the day of the primary election). We’ve noted the positions that are up for election in the upcoming primary and general elections.

We have a strong mayor-council system, and we all vote for the mayor as well as all of our city council positions (in other systems, the mayor is selected from among the council members by the council, which was previously the case here prior to our current mayor). There are seven council positions, each serves for four years, and they alternate between three and four positions coming up for election every two years. Council members are a part time, nonpartisan position, while the mayor serves full time.
Our city has a population of about 110,000 residents.

County #
Federal Way is entirely in King County’s 7th district. There’s a county executive, and each of the 9 districts has one council member. These council positions are nominally nonpartisan, but everybody knows Pete’s a Republican.

State #
We’re all a part of the 30th legislative district, which also includes portions of Des Moines, Auburn, Pacific, Algona, Milton, and unincorporated King County areas. Each of the 49 districts has two representatives and one senator. The legislative session is relatively brief and alternates between budget years (longer session) and regular years (shorter session).
There are a lot of state-wide political and judicial offices not covered here aside from the governor.
